The “social” functionalities are implemented through a Bluetooth module (included within the device) and an application for smartphone, that will be possible to download for free from Android and IOS stores.
The Bluetooth module continuously transmits a signal indicating the device’s unique code. When we are still ashore (before the dive) and we place the smartphone really close to a device, the App recognizes that device and asks if we want to include it within our “embark list”. If we repeat the same operation with all devices of our diving group, we’ll be able to quickly build the list of all our diving companions. Once we close the “embark list”, the smartphone transmits the list to the SHARKNET server and, upon completion of the following dive, we’ll find in our electronic logbook also the contacts of all who dove with us.
If we dive with a Dive Center, the above operation can be carried out by the manager of the Dive Center or by his boater. The boater however has an additional functionality available: if he keeps the app running, his phone continuously checks the presence of all divers within the “embark list” and, if they are found onboard, it colors their names by green. As the divers submerge, the boater’s smartphone loses the Bluetooth connection and paints the corresponding names in red. After resurfacing, when any diver gets back onboard, his name turns green again: this way there no risk to leave anybody behind, not even in the most crowded places!
If anybody within the embark list is missing, the same app is able to query the device of the missing diver and, if he resurfaced anywhere else, his position is displayed in a geographical chart, with his direction and distance.
